Swords came together in the Spring of 2009, when Bradford Jordan and Lucas Kavner were both members of the PIT house improv team, Party Lights. After performing a few times together, they realized they had the same outlook on comedy: grounded, realistic, human characters in absurd situations. Also, lots of flapping penis jokes. But mostly honesty.
The next fall, they started performing together more often and ended up winning the PIT’s “Sketchprov” competition, which pits over 40 comedy groups against each other in a battle of sketch and improv. The final rounds were judged by writers and producers from The Colbert Report, Letterman, and various NBC shows. In January 2010, Swords began their weekly Friday night residency at the PIT – consistently selling out shows alongside veterans, The Nathan & Joe Show. They were nominated for ECNY and INNY awards for their comedy and kick ass photos (taken by the inimitable Eric Michael Pearson), and have since been lucky enough to perform with comedy luminaries, Kurt Braunohler, Kristen Schaal, Matt Oberg, Ashley Ward, New Excitement, Harvard Sailing Team, and many others.
Their videos have been seen by hundreds of thousands of people and have been featured in Time Magazine, Politico, Vanity Fair, Comedy Central, and on Alabama local news station, WHNT, which is the best Alabama local news station in the world.
Bradford Jordan is a comedian based in Brooklyn, N.Y. He performs every Wednesday night with PIT house team Senator at the PIT. By day, he teachers and performs in schools around New York with the Story Pirates. Bradford has performed improvised and sketch comedy at the Providence Improv Festival, Chicago Improv Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2009 and 2010, his two person group Swords won the SketchProv tournament at The Peoples Improv Theater. Swords was also nominated for ECNY and INNY awards. In addition to performing, Bradford writes short stories and directs and performs in talking pictures.
Bradford can be reached at bradford.jordan (at) gmail.com.
Lucas Kavner has studied improv at the PIT and UCB theatres. As an actor, he’s performed at the Kennedy Center, Atlantic Stage 2, the Abingdon Theatre, Ars Nova, Naked Angels, Second Stage, and Williamstown. His writing has been featured in the Washington Post, The Dallas Morning News, and McSweeney’s, among others, and his election video from fall 2008, “Vlad and Boris present Song for Sarah for Misses Palin,” was seen on the BBC, Russia Today, MSNBC, ITV, heard on NPR’s World Cafe, and featured in the New York Times and Time Magazine. You may have seen him in videos for College Humor or Black 20, or on TV in Comedy Central’s “Michael and Michael Have Issues.” He’s also been seen or heard in commercials for McDonald’s and Mercedes Benz, and he kicked some crazy ass in a Huggies commercial when he was a baby, so say his parents, who are unreliable.
Lucas was a proud member of PIT house team Party Lights, and is now excited to be a member of The Baldwins. He performs consistently at the PIT and beyond with Bradford Jordan in the ECNY and INNY-nominated improv group, Swords, and hosts Ars Nova’s monthly variety show, Showgasm. Three cheers for eating cereal in the middle of the day!
